Story 25: Trailblazing Radiology - Dr. Adrien Bernard, Interventional Radiologist

Dr. Adrien Bernard, QCH radiologist, made history as the first Canadian physician to implant the Gianturco-Rösch biliary Z-stent on November 7, 1989. Less than a year later, on July 23, 1990, the device received approval for use across Canada, marking a major step forward in minimally invasive medicine. He continued pushing boundaries, becoming the first in Canada to perform Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) in 1998.

1989 - Gianturco-Rösch biliary Z-stent

The Gianturco-Rösch biliary Z-stent procedure offered a new way to treat blocked bile ducts without major surgery. By inserting a small stent using imaging guidance, doctors could quickly restore bile flow, reducing recovery time, risk, and discomfort for patients.

1998 - Uterine Artery Embolization

The Uterine Artery Embolization provided a non-surgical option for treating fibroids by cutting off their blood supply. It allowed many patients to avoid hysterectomy while benefiting from a shorter, less invasive recovery.

These pioneering procedures established QCH as a leader in interventional radiology, bringing safer, less invasive treatments to patients and shaping the future of care.
