Celebrating Indigenous Nurses – Honouring the Past, Empowering the Future

We are proud to kick off Nursing Week by recognizing and celebrating the contributions of Indigenous Nurses. Monday is a time to celebrate the achievements of our ancestors who paved the way, the current generation of nurses pushing for change and our future generations of Indigenous nurses.

Indigenous nurses bring unique knowledge, lived experiences, and cultural perspectives that enrich the care we provide. Their voices are essential in advancing health equity, promoting culturally safe care, and challenging the systems that have too often failed Indigenous communities.

The Canadian Nurses Association reminds us that:

Nurses have an obligation to respect and value each person’s individual culture and consider how culture may impact an individual’s experience of health care and the health care system (2018).

At QCH, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and reaffirm our commitment to creating an environment where dignity, safety, and well-being are protected for all—especially for those whose identities have historically been met with harm, discrimination, or silence.

To all Indigenous nurses past, present, and future: we see you, we honour you, and we thank you. Your leadership, resilience, and care are making a lasting difference.
