Emma’s Journey from ACC to MD

At QCH, stories of growth, resilience, and purpose often unfold quietly behind the scenes. Emma Lewis is one of them—an inspiring path shaped by uncertainty, family, and a deep desire to help others.

Emma began her journey at QCH as an Administrative Control Clerk (ACC) in Diagnostic Imaging. From the front desk, she managed patient registrations, coordinated with radiologists, handled communications across departments, and became the essential link between patients, staff, and physicians. At the time, she didn’t have a clear direction—only a quiet instinct that she was meant to be in healthcare.

Growing up, Emma witnessed her mother’s health struggles, including chronic back issues and complex surgeries. She often found herself in a caregiver role, the first to step in when her family needed support. It was this early exposure to the realities of illness, combined with her experience as the eldest child, that planted the seeds of compassion and curiosity in medicine. Still, she wasn’t quite sure where those seeds would grow.

After completing a Health Sciences degree at the University of Ottawa, Emma continued working at QCH while figuring out her next steps. Inspired by the hospital community—and encouraged by physicians she’d built rapport with—she applied to medical school. Fast forward a few years, and Emma has now earned her MD.

What sets her apart is the unique perspective she brings to medicine. Having worked in administrative healthcare, she deeply understands the behind-the-scenes systems that keep a hospital running. From scheduling CT scans to guiding patients through registration, she knows the value of every role. “It all starts from the bottom,” she says. “Everyone matters—and everyone has a hand in patient care.”

As she prepares to begin her residency, Emma carries with her more than medical training. She brings empathy for every team member, a strong sense of collaboration, and a personal commitment to making a difference. Her advice to others who feel unsure about their future? “Start somewhere. You don’t have to have it all figured out. If it’s something you feel called to do, just go for it.”

Emma’s story is one of full-circle moments: her mother worked in the same role she started in, the same hospital that helped shape her ambition. Now, Emma is set to make an impact not just as a doctor—but as someone who truly understands the power of teamwork, kindness, and starting from the ground up.
