Taking Charge at 40: A Milestone for Women’s Health

At Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH), we believe in empowering women to take proactive steps for their health. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are spotlighting a powerful change that makes it easier than ever for women to prioritize their well-being.

Last year, Ontario expanded the Breast Screening Program (OBSP) to allow women over 40 to self-refer for mammograms, without a doctor’s referral, and women aged 30 who are considered high risk. Women can get screened even if they have no breast cancer symptoms or history of breast cancer. Early detection significantly improves outcomes since mammograms can catch tumors at a stage when they’re small, less likely to have spread, and easier to treat.

A QCH Advocate

Our very own Lindsay Wyers, CIO and VP of Digital Transformation, recently celebrated turning 40 with a meaningful gift: getting her first mammogram. It only took 10 minutes. She documented the experience here at QCH!
